Any person trained in psychology, applied psychology, counselling or related disciplines who wishes to practice in Ghana — whether as a professional, paraprofessional, lay practitioner or psychologist assistant — must be registered with the Council under Section 5 of Act 857.
A Professional holds a Master's, PhD or PsyD in Psychology or Counselling. A Paraprofessional holds a Bachelor's Degree or Diploma in Applied Psychology / Counselling. A Lay Practitioner holds a Certificate in Counselling. A Psychologist Assistant holds a First Degree in Psychology.
All licenses must be renewed on or before 31st December for the following calendar year, in line with Section 125(3) of Act 857. Download the renewal form from the Downloads page, complete it and submit it with the prescribed renewal fee.
Yes. Under Part 5 of Act 857, every facility (individual-owned or corporate-owned) where psychological or counselling services are provided must be licensed and accredited by the Council annually.
Once a complete application with all required documents has been submitted, the standard processing time is between four and eight weeks, including verification of credentials and Council review.
Yes. Foreign-trained psychologists, therapists and paraprofessionals are required to take a registration examination conducted by the Council as part of the licensure process.

CPD refers to the ongoing learning activities that licensed practitioners must complete each year to maintain their registration. The Council accredits CPD providers and tracks CPD points for all registrants.
